From Clean Streets to Stronger Communities: The Kalmyk Heritage Center Continues Its Civic Engagement in Bensonhurst
At the Kalmyk Heritage Center, we believe that preserving our cultural heritage also means being an active and responsible member of the community we call home. Throughout July and August 2026, our volunteers continued that commitment by participating in neighborhood clean-up and beautification efforts in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, in collaboration with the offices of Assembly Member William Colton and Council Member Susan Zhuang.
Following the success of our July 25 community clean-up with the office of Assembly Member William Colton, our volunteers remained engaged in efforts to improve the appearance and quality of life of our neighborhood. Community members once again rolled up their sleeves, worked together, and demonstrated that even simple acts of service can make a meaningful difference.
Continuing the Work Beyond a Single Clean-Up
Neighborhood beautification is not a one-day project. Keeping streets, sidewalks, and shared public spaces clean requires continued participation from residents, community organizations, elected officials, and local partners.
Our July and August volunteer efforts provided an opportunity for members of the Kalmyk community to contribute directly to Bensonhurst while building relationships with other community-minded organizations and public servants.
We are especially grateful to the offices of Assembly Member William Colton and Council Member Susan Zhuang for their continued work on behalf of the local community and for providing opportunities for residents to participate in neighborhood improvement efforts.
For the Kalmyk Heritage Center, these activities are about more than picking up litter. They are an opportunity to teach the next generation that civic responsibility begins with taking care of the place we live.
An Opportunity for Students to Serve and Lead
We encourage high school and college students to participate in future Kalmyk Heritage Center volunteer activities. Community service provides students with a meaningful way to contribute to their neighborhood while developing leadership, teamwork, and civic engagement skills.
Students who volunteer with the Kalmyk Heritage Center can receive documentation of their community service hours for submission to their school or qualifying organization. Students who demonstrate consistent participation and leadership may also be eligible to receive letters of recommendation from our directors for college applications, scholarships, employment, or other opportunities.
Our goal is to build a strong corps of young volunteers who understand that community service is not simply a requirement—it is an opportunity to make a tangible difference.
Building Partnerships Throughout Our Community
The Kalmyk Heritage Center is proud to work alongside elected officials, community organizations, local residents, businesses, and volunteers to strengthen Bensonhurst.
As a registered 501(c)(3) publicly supported charity, we depend on community partnerships and generous supporters to help sustain our outreach programs. Local businesses and organizations can play an important role in supporting future clean-up and beautification events.

Heavy-duty trash bags, brooms, and protective gloves.
Bottled water and snacks for volunteers.
High-visibility safety vests or T-shirts for our volunteer team.
